In the case of metal valves the glass base is bonded to a metal tube envelope. The evacuation of the envelope is made through the base. The IO or International Octal base was introduced by RCA for the metal valves in 1935. The thin metal tube envelope is 25mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 50mm tall.
